One first day from maternity leave det. Sam Shepherd has a cold case from 30 years ago thrust upon her by her DI. It’s the well-publicized case of the unsolved murder of a much-loved benevolent Anglican Priest on the steps of his very own Church Dunedin Anglican Cathedral. The news rocked the community and went Global. Dunedin Police were shamed by their inability to solve this crime when it happened, and it’s remained an embarrassment and sore point especially to Sam’s DI who has more than one personal and professional link to wanting the crime solved. As usual Sam’s under great pressure to solve the crime and discovers as she delves further into the mystery more and more has been covered up and someone desperately wants the sins of the past to remain hidden. Just then a new witness is found only to be shockingly murdered and now the pressure and urgency to solve a crime of the past is turned up to boil as Sam tries to prevent more murders happening in the present.
5 Stars. Like other Vanda Symon mysteries the plot twists, turns and the unexpected will keep your interest peaked and the title choice ‘Prey’ becomes clear as with Symon’s other Sam Shepherd mysteries.
