This is book 27 in well known Scarpetta series.  Although I enjoy Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta’s mysteries very much this one followed the same tried and true format.  Kay, trusted forensic team including her brother-in law Monaro secret service special agent and skilled test pilot Lucy are sent on an extremely hush- hush homeland security mission to the site of 2 horribly disfigure corpses found by a hiker in the most secluded and rugged parts of the Northern Virginia Wilerness.  Kay has not been told much about this case only that the murders of the male and female campers were horrific for the victims as they seemed to have been smashed almost unrecognizable to death, tossed down like broken things by someone or something with little regard for human life that was incredibly stealthy and very strong.  The campsite the victims were known to be on the run as former spies fearful of capture so their campsite was rigged with early warning devices, weapons, traps and more to guard against intruders but all this failed.  Monaro brings some humour to the mystery because he thinks something not human caused the devastation – like a sasqwatch from Native American legend still said to be living in remote areas of the wild.  But Kay suspects something far more ruthless and sinister is at play.  As she analyses more and more collected forensic evidence from the scene, Kay pieces together the big picture so frightening that it was deliberately hidden in the past from her by the government and her family.   Another good Scarpetta mystery.
