The Companion Animals Act 1998 was introduced in NSW on 1 July 1999 to protect pets, people and the wider community. Ownership of companion animals, while pleasurable, also brings with it a number of legal requirements and responsibilities to ensure the health and welfare of the animal, carers and neighbours.
As a responsible pet owner you are required to keep your animals details up-to-date. Change of address and/or change of owner forms must be completed and lodged with council. ‘Companion Animal Change of Address Form’ & ‘Companion Animal Change of Owners Form’ can be found here.
How to adopt a dog or cat
- Download and complete the Animal Adoption Form.
- Make an appointment to view animals with the Companion Animals Education Officer on (02) 6660 0300. At your appointment the Companion Animals Education Officer will discuss the animal’s temperament as witnessed while in Council care and the health as assessed by the Companion Animals Education Officer and a local veterinarian if there has been any health concerns.
If you find a dog or cat you like, the Companion Animals Education Officer will hold the animal, pending proof of payment (receipt) from Council’s Casino administration office. Animals can be viewed at the Casino Shelter, located in the Casino Nammoona Landfill, Dargaville Road, Casino (opposite the Casino Regional Livestock Exchange).
- At Council’s Casino administration office (Corner Graham Place and Walker Street) during office hours, pay the re-housing cost using cash, cheque or EFTPOS. The re-housing costs will be confirmed by the Companion Animals Education Officer but as a guide, a maximum payment of $290 includes micro-chipping, registration, first vaccination and desexing.
- Return to the Casino Shelter by appointment with the Companion Animals Education Officer to collect your animal. Present the receipt issued by Council’s Casino administration office as proof of purchase.
Please note: The Companion Animals Education Officer, Casino Shelter and the regulatory control team cannot take pre-orders for dogs or cats. At any time, please contact Council to obtain a list of the animals currently residing at the Casino Shelter on (02) 6660 0300.
