Community Engagement
Community Engagement refers to the process of Council working with members of the community to ensure the services provided for in Council planning are what is needed by the community.
Effective community engagement involves identifying relevant stakeholder groups and their preferred methods of communication.
Council has conducted various activities in order to develop the Community Engagement Strategy including holding community forums and community satisfaction surveys.
In September 2011 Council adopted the Community Engagement Strategy and Policy documents to guide the future processes Council will undertake in relation to community engagement. The community is invited to make comment on the documents and their content to council@richmondvalley.nsw.gov.au or by telephone to (02) 6660 0300.

Community Strategic Plan
Background and History
During the period October to December 2009 Council undertook a number of community forums and gained information/feedback via surveys relating to the content of a Community Strategic Plan. Between December 2009 and March 2010 the raw data received from the various community engagement processes has been categorised into seven focus areas. In addition, an initial basic draft of the proposed Community Strategic Plan has been prepared and a start made on using the information provided by the community for the following components of the Plan:
- Community Perceptions of the Richmond Valley
- Long Term Goals for our local area
- Strategies to achieve our goals
- Performance Indicators to measure progress in achieving our goals
On 9 and 10 March 2010 community information sessions were held at Evans Head and Casino to provide information on how the information/feedback received by Council in late 2009 was used to develop the initial draft Community Strategic Plan. The information displayed and used at those sessions was what the community said at various forums and via survey forms and other consultations during October to December 2009. Following the March 2010 community information sessions the opportunity was made available up until the end of April for the community to comment.
In early November 2010 a Media Release and Advertisements were published in relation to the further opportunity for community input/comment. A Second (November 2010) Draft of the Community Strategic Plan was made available and Community Forums held at Evans Head and Casino on 24 and 25 November 2010 respectively. The community was invited to make comment on the second draft by 16 December 2010.
In early March 2011, Council held community forums at Woodburn and Casino in regards to a special rate variation for 2011/2011 based on "projects" that had been identified as part of the Community Strategic Plan. As part of those processes copies of the latest draft of the Community Strategic Plan were distributed.
On 12 April 2011, Council held an Extraordinary Meeting to endorse a range of Integrated Planning and Reporting documents (including the Community Strategic Plan) so that same could be placed on public exhibition for a period of 28 days prior to adoption on 24 May 2011.
On 24 May 2011, Council adopted the Richmond Valley Community Strategic Plan 2011/2024 (and other associated Integrated Planning and Reporting documents).
