Background

Charlie Cox is a fourth generation Casino resident.  He was educated at St Mary's, Casino and St John's College, Woodlawn.    He trained at Armidale before entering the teaching service with the NSW Department of Education.  A memorable 35 years were spent at Casino Public School prior to his retirement.  Charlie also experienced 8 years in business with his wife Robyn in a successful retail venture.

Charlie was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2006 for his "service to local government, service to the surf lifesaving movement and service to the community of Casino".

In Local Government, Charlie's 10 years of elected life includes:

  • Mayor of Casino (2 years)
  • Mayor of Richmond Valley Council (6 years)
  • Chair and Leadership of numerous committees and delegations

A long-term involvement and commitment to surf lifesaving has been recognised with three life memberships:

  • Evans Head-Casino Surf Life Saving Club (1984)
  • Far North Coast Branch Surf Life Saving of Australia (1986)
  • NSW Surf Life Saving Association (1991)

Charlie has served his club in numerous positions including Patrol Captain, Club Captain, Chief Instructor, Secretary, Club President.

His service extended to 10 years as Far North Coast Branch Secretary and membership of the State Management Committee.  He has also served as Secretary to the Board of Examiners, Official Water Starter at State Championships and Branch Team Manager.

In his 15 years as Secretary/Treasurer of NSW Country Branches, his duties included the co-ordination of the annual NSW Country Championships at venues from the Victorian to Queensland borders.  A special achievement was his selection as Manager of the NSW Country Representative Team for its New Zealand tours of 1983 and 1986.

In 1990 Charlie was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the World Life Saving Association for distinguished service.

In 1998 Charlie was awarded Life Membership of the Casino and District Soccer Association for his involvement over many years as player, coach of junior teams, and work for the committee.

Charlie has also served the community as Chair of the NSW Cancer Council Relay for Life and as Chair of Casino Meals on Wheels.

Within the guidelines of Council's policies and available resources, to achieve the best possible outcomes in providing appropriate infrastructure and services for both the present and future needs of the whole Richmond Valley community.
